Sexuality in Taiwan: A beautiful irony
Sylvia Lin The Daily
Feb 15, 2016 At first glimpse, sexuality in Taiwan seems like a pretty
tame concept. Unlike in the United States, where sex is often expressed
unabashedly in movies, music, and day-to-day conversation, the topic of
sex feels almost taboo in Taiwan. Even married adults may laugh
uncomfortably, or put on a stony face, as if offended, when the topic is
brought up. High school teachers, when cornered by the necessity of sex
education, prefer the formality of “sexual intercourse” over other
colloquialisms. However sexuality in Taiwan is not just
an inconvenience that needs to be shunned or euphemized in vocal
expressions. On the contrary, sexuality manifests itself in unexpectedly
vibrant subcultures in this supposedly conservative island country.
